About us

Welcome to Taipei International Club has fostered international friendship, cultural exchange and mutual understanding since 1986, and in 2026 we celebrate our 40th anniversary.

Our club began with an invitation from Washington. While she lived there, Madam Julie Chien was asked by the Board of the Welcome to Washington International Club to start its first sister club in Asia. She founded our club in Taipei in 1986 to help the spouses of foreign diplomats settle quickly into life in Taiwan and get to know its culture, history and customs, and to give Taiwanese members a place to learn across cultures. She led the club for 38 years and is now our Honorary President. In 2024 she received the WCI Marian Adair Award.

Our year includes an annual lecture, a cultural tea party, a festive Christmas Luncheon and lively interest groups: international cooking, art and culture visits to Taipei’s museums, and an Exploration Group that discovers the city’s oldest streets and temples together. We hosted the WCI 16th Biennial Conference in 2024.

We celebrated our 35th anniversary on March 30, 2021. Our past president Athenia Kuo played a key part in WCI gaining its status at the United Nations, and in 2024 we hosted the WCI International Conference for the second time, after 2002.

Marian Adair Award 2024

Julie Chien: Madam Julie Chien stood beside her husband, Dr. Fredrick F. Chien, former ROC Representative to the United States and Minister of Foreign Affairs, through decades of diplomatic service. In Washington, the Board of the Welcome to Washington International Club invited her to start its first sister club in Asia. In 1986 she founded the Welcome to Taipei International Club to help the spouses of foreign envoys settle into life in Taipei and learn its culture, history and customs, and to give Taiwanese members a place to learn across cultures. She led the club for 38 years and is its Honorary President. She has also chaired many women’s organizations and devoted much of her life to charity and to supporting people in need.
