About us

The Anglo-German International Women’s Association brings together women of every nationality in Hamburg. Our aim is to promote and strengthen friendship through social and charitable work, cultural visits, lectures and discussion groups.

The club was founded in 1966 as the Anglo-German Women’s Association by British and German women, led by Jill Oakeshott, wife of the British Consul General in Hamburg. In 1972 we opened our membership to women of every nationality and took our present name. We are non-denominational, non-political and non-profit.

A bi-monthly newsletter keeps members up to date on visits, exhibitions, guided tours and our calendar. Every June we spend a day at a place of special interest outside Hamburg, and in December we meet for a festive Christmas luncheon. AGIWA also supports charities.

Our honorary patron is the British Ambassador to Germany, and our Christmas luncheon at the Anglo-German Club raises money for the children’s charity “Hamburg macht Kinder gesund”. We also hold concerts that support young music students in Hamburg.
